What is it?

Why should I sign up for this class?

Lettering with personality is my most popular workshop that I've taught and now you are able to take it online at your own pace. Plus! I've expanded the course to include content that a standard 2-3 hour workshop would not be able to include. In this course you'll receive an overview of lettering and then learn the basics of adding personality to your work along with guided exercises and demos.

Through guided exercises and demonstrations, you will gain the confidence to add personality to your compositions and try strategies you may not otherwise have thought to try. These are tried and true methods I've used in my own work and I'm incredibly excited to share them with you!

Here's what you get:

Lesson 01: What is Lettering?

A brief overview of lettering and the basics for those who have never done lettering before or those who want a review.

Lesson 02: Lettering Overview

For those that have never done lettering before or have just dabbled, this is a quick crash course covering various styles and techniques for achieving those styles. Includes some guidance worksheets of several alphabets, both upper and lower case, and a guide featuring different styles.

Lesson 03: Mixing Styles

Mixing upper and lower case along with mixing up print and cursive effectively and how to use vintage references in your work to help guide your style. I will also demo how music fits into the ebb and flow of what your lettering looks like.

Lesson 04: Let's Talk Layouts

A guide for how to draw layouts until you become confident in laying out your lettering without one. You will learn how to pull vintage layouts as reference and how I go about thumbnailing and determining what will be emphasized in a lettering composition.

Lesson 05: Contour Line Drawings

Just like creating contour line drawings of objects, we can do the same with lettering. I will guide you in creating a contour line alphabet and show you how this is one way to allow your own style to shine through without focusing on the style itself.

Lesson 06: Playing with Highs and Lows

Here is where we start adding some playfulness to the composition, utilizing size to change up how your lettering appears and giving it a more whimsical vibe.

Lesson 07: Using Shapes

Using shapes to define what the lettering will look like, I will show you my methods for figuring out one word as well as using shapes to define a full phrase.

Lesson 08: Give it Some Emotion

All letting has emotion. How do we use emotion to determine the style of the composition? I will show you ways of switching things up to add emotion into your work and we will play with several different emotions in the process.

Final Project: Create a Sticker Design

Utilizing the lessons you've learned in this class, you are going to choose a word or a phrase and design a sticker using one of the exercises you've learned.

Bonus Content!

In here you will find some additional lessons that didn't quite fit anywhere else! From adding style to your lettering to some fun drop shadow inspiration

Bonus Exercises: Putting it All Together

Selected additional lettering step-by-step exercises for if you just can't get enough!

What to expect:

I will be sharing my whole process with you from start to finish, giving you a comprehensive look at how I craft my lettering compositions for clients and personal work with step by step demonstrations and advice.

In taking this class you will:

  • Get a quick review of the basics of lettering
  • Learn multiple ways to add personality to your lettering without focusing on style
  • Gain the confidence to add that personality to your lettering
  • Create confident compositions

I will also provide you with a set of some of my favorite go-to brushes that I have created for Photoshop and Procreate.

The skills you learn in this course can be applied to a variety of projects such as editorial work, stationery and products, prints, and much more. Students will be able to work towards finding their style in an organic way that allows them to develop it along the way without focusing so hard on the "What is my style?" question.

About the Artist

I am a hand lettering artist and illustrator with an obsession with cold brew located in Chicago, where I work out of my studio with my puppy, Teddy, the Director of Cute (for which is does a very heckin’ good job). I have over ten years of experience in lettering and have had the pleasure of working with clients such as Samsung, Publix, Adobe, Seventeen Magazine, Microsoft, and many many others. I am also one of the authors of Creative Lettering & Beyond from Walter Foster Publishing.

Outside of illustration, my hobby is figure skating (specifically ice dance) and playing video games in the evening.
